More like their defense bailed out the goaltenders. You need to look at the analytics. Their goaltenders played poorly if you look at overall shots, high danger area shots, number of power plays against, defensemen clearing rebounds. There's a million things they look at. The Leafs defense played so well last year, that their goaltenders should have been in the top five. That's why there was no way they were keeping Campbell, no matter how long or how little money he was asking. He was up and down all year.

You're not reading it right. I said he has more even strength goals than anyone else since entering the league. That's a fact. Look it up. You don't count from the time Ovechkin entered the league. You count from the time Matthews entered it. Of course Ovechkin has more overall. He played about 5 times as many games.

Just my 2 cents as a non-expert fan : To win you need a balance of many factors and you deal from your surplus to address your weaknesses to try and achieve that balance. Offence, defence, goaltending, grit, leadership. It is a difficult balancing act however if you have too much of one and not enough of some of the others, you won't succeed.

All this to say for the Leafs.....way too many skilled offensive players and not enough players with grit and high compete levels. Deal from the excess to address the weakness to try to achieve championship balance. Nylander is excess skill and high salary cap, use him to get Chychrun and overall the team is better. Better to win 3-1 than to lose 6-4.

Trading Matthews would be nothing short of a panic move that would surely put the Leafs in non-playoff territory, undoubtedly. Trading Tavares would make much more sense. Like I said before, Tavares hasn't done anything with the Islanders nor the Leafs. The Islanders ironically did much better after he left. The Capitals never panicked with Ovechkin. It took him 14 years to get his first cup. I'm not saying we should wait another 8 years, but I would rather see the Leafs make the playoffs, than not.
Look at Steve Yzerman. Wasn't he drafted in 1983, or something like that? The Dead Wings didn't win until 97. That's a long time, man. They nearly traded him to Ottawa, but they're sure glad they didn't panic because he won 4 cups with them.

You're forgetting though, those 2 guys you mentioned play/played with heart and pride while Matthews seems like he's just there for a paycheque more often than not, you could be right about Matthews but it's not looking that way and no one is taking that Tavares contract he has a no movement clause too making it that much harder too

Kadri gets suspended 2 years in a row, then gets suspended again with Colorado. Marner shoots the puck over the glass, believe it or not, 7 times. There's a fine line between winning and losing, and it's an accumulation of little things that translates to losses.
