Mathews cap hit is $11.6 making him the highest leaf player. Not Tavares. And they were signed for different reasons. You keep bringing up awards that Mathews has won. The point you miss is that those awards mean fuck all. The only thing that matters is the cup.

Unless Mathews changes his style of play dramatically he's not the guy to get them there.

Matthews was still on his entry level contract when Tavares was signed. Dubass overpaying Tavares caused Dubass to overpay Matthews and Marner. If Tavares wanted to play for his hometown team, he could have taken a lot less money. Then Matthews could have taken less and still get paid more than Tavares. Winning individual awards like the Calder, Hart, and the Richard Trophy twice, may not matter to the fans much, but it sure does to Matthews, in that he will command even more money on his next contract. Then what? Half of the team will need to get traded, because of the salary cap. So there you go. Overpaying for Tavares will actually kill the Leaf's chances of winning the cup, rather than help it.

I agree that Tavares is over paid,most athletes are. What I don't agree with is him getting blamed for that contract. Leaf management didn't have to agree to his number. You can't blame a brother for getting paid.

Mathews no doubt will ask for McKinnon like money if not more. Unless he's lead the Leafs to a cup he's not worth it. He'll then walk and the Leafs will get nothing in return. If they exit in the first round again, you are better off trading him while you can still get a return. You're stuck with Tavares' contract like it or not.

Like I said before, Tavares hasn't done anything with the Islanders nor the Leafs. The Islanders ironically did much better after he left. The Capitals never panicked with Ovechkin. It took him 14 years to get his first cup. I'm not saying we should wait another 8 years, but I would rather see the Leafs make the playoffs, than not.
Look at Steve Yzerman. Wasn't he drafted in 1983, or something like that? The Dead Wings didn't win until 97. That's a long time, man. They nearly traded him to Ottawa, but they're sure glad they didn't panic because he won 4 cups with them.

The D on the Leafs has improved considerably in the last 2 years. The Leafs had the 28th best goaltending last year, and still ended up with the best winning percentage in their 104 year history.

too early to tell at the moment. Mathews had a breakout last season. we will see in about 10 years or so.
