Guess you are wrong thinking that. Banking existed before you Brits thought about it. Certainly already in the middle ages in Italy. Stock exchange started in Flanders (Bruges). Even the name in some languages, de Beurs, la Bourse, came from a local family in Bruges. Building still exists. I know everything had to do with a lot of Italian merchants living in Bruges.
