Thai doormen/Thai guys looking for fights

again, that is the exact reason why thai's feel they can get away with going after farangs
why would you be quick to difuse a situation you didn't start with paying for their drinks??

but it really is damned if you, damned if you don't in LOS
i really do believe that farang's backing down just encourages thai's to continue to do this sort of thing ( but the alternative in most cases is getting beaten by a group instead of 1 on 1)
i certainly wouldn't be buying any thai guys that started shit drinks but it is wise also not to get into a fight

I think that most times you find yourself in a situation like this, you have done something to get yourself there :yes:

My original reply was that I think the way Inhodel handled his situation was good....and I still do. Perhaps it is more of an Australian thing, but don't most see it as poor form to get aggro with someone who offers to buy you a drink?
(In Oz, it's even poorer form to miss out on free booze :he

I could say that I would do this because it's the safe route, that buying a drink is cheaper than a hospital visit, that it is only "x" baht etc etc and it is but truthfully....well, truthfully doing something like that, a 150 baht for a Chivas, make that two, a "chok dee", a big smile and then quietly ignore them like the boot soil they are until they leave.

....truthfully...it's my own form of passive aggression, it says "I've got money" and money in Thailand is the real power, the real winner.....and I just bought them off for ten bucks I'll never miss.....sure, I could raise my temper, bump chests, do the old "push-me-shove-you" but why give him a chance at a victory when it is so much easier and so quietly satisfying to simply remind him of his place in this world in a clear but subtle way......that's really how we rich people should behave isn't it?

Well put IMO. I guess for many their ego/machismo won't let them back down to anyone. They need to show their mates, girls, surrounding crowd, and/or whomever they disagree with that, "I am right and you are wrong".

Taking the silent victory may not be as much fun in the heat of the moment, but as they say: it's he who laughs last, not loudest.

As for how rich people should act... I personally don't know anything about that. 555 :what:

I don't think I've ever felt particularly threatened by Thai men in that sort of situation, I'm cautious of whiskey circles but have been to nightclubs and weird Karaokes all over the place without feeling overly concerned, I'm generally quite level headed though, most people who get in trouble out here are twats or being twattish.

Marc26 - I'm sure they take the piss out of us, Just as I'm sure we all would back home if some French guy rocked into your local speaking a funny language or trying to speak your language badly.

I agree they are not. I've been here for a couple of years now and haven't had a problem. I've seen it Thai's against Falang as much as Thai against Thai. Same as everywhere else, yep it's a strange but good place and if you treat people with a degree of respect and not get involved in their Shite all will be o.k. It's no different to anywhere else, show respect, don't judge, leave prejudice and misconceptions at home, most of all judge based on your experience. Not the snot others would have you believe - form your own opinion and you'll love it.

I think going out in the UK is generally a lot safer than it used to be 15 or 20 years ago.
Back home in Newcastle in the late 80's & early 90's there was violence every time we went out.
Beatings, stabbings, shootings happened on a weekly basis in the city centre pubs & clubs.
CCTV & licensing of doormen has stopped 95% of the violence that used to happen in the UK.
The problem is that some people are now used to behaving obnoxiously without any violent consequences.

If you are even a little bit careful you will never be involved in any violence in Thailand.
In fact I have never even seen a fight in Thailand. (I am normally in bed by midnight though).

The problem is if it does kick off any Thai bouncer or Tuk Tuk driver will feel intimidated by being confronted by a
larger Farang, he will go over the top with the use of violence / weapons to save face.
IMHO there is nothing to gain in any violent confrontation with Thais, just apologise & walk away.

In all my trips to thailand I have never even come close to a fight.I have seen a few.All of them caused by a farang doing something obnoxious.Yes the thai guys did descend in "gangs".Yes they do seem to relish the chance to hoe into a foreigner.Why would'nt they? Tourists have more money and get all the attention they want from the girls just because of this.The thai guys wants a girl too and can't get her because the other guys has more $$$.Add a few drinks into the mix and you can understand their anger.
Thats no excuse for fighting but I see how it happens. My philsophy is not to let anything worry me,if I find myself sitting next to 4 thai guys and they don't look happy I simply move further away or go to another bar.I seek not to engage them in any way, friendly or otherwise. I remain polite and smile no matter how many beers I have had. One time I was in a kareoke with 3 guys and 4 girls and 4 thai guys were at the next table.One of the girls was a bit drunk and when one of the thai guys stood up she toppled over into him knocking over his almost empty drink. I stood up and helped her up said sorry to the guy and without asking called the waitress over and ordered them 4 new drinks on me. They were exchanging a few heated thai words but as soon as the drinks were ordered and I "blamed" the girl there was no issue.
I was with a really big guy on my last trip, he has a knack for getting into fights back home. Whereever we went he kept saying to me" that guy wants to fight me, that guy was agressive to me." I was right next to him and never got the same feeling , so it also depends on your own attitudes.
