Spleen imbalance - why?

I've noticed with some of my clients that their spleen develops crystals when they are stressed. I don't mean just day to day "oh I've got too much work" kinda a stress but the major event stress such as divorce, bereavment, redundancy.

None of them have any issues with their blood so the only thing I can think of is that the major stress has compromised their immune system and the spleen is reflecting this.

What does everyone else think?

in Chinese medicine the spleen is related to 'over thinking' hence the area showing up if they are stressed.

The spleen meridian is also found on outside of the big toe nail,worth having a look there to confirm that the spleen,the largest lymphatic organ is imbalanced.While there may be no known blood disorders when the spleen is in disharmony there may be blood deficiency.The spleen is also in harmony with stomach meridian,did you find any imbalances here???

Also consider that energetically the spleen represents family, and fear. I like this article that talks about TCM and the spleen. Always consider the emotional and spiritual influence on the reflexes - it is after all "mind, body, spirit" medicine.

Star, no, there haven't been any stomach disorders at all and my notes don't suggest any big toe nail disorders. Hmmm. Interesting though.

My reflexology training didn't include meridians but I think it's something of which I need an understanding so will search out a few books.

It does make me wonder how we can survive without this organ,I know people who have had removed after accidents.Does it put extra stress on the other lymphatic systems????

I would recommend Inge Dougan's latest book "The Art of Reflexology" and Lilian Tibshraeny-Morten's "Moving the Energy: Reflexology and Meridian Therapy." In the meantime visit Acuxo.com's website, click on "Meridians" then "Spleen" then "SP1" to see its location on the foot. You can do the same for the liver, stomach and other points. Here's an article that will tell you which meridians are on which toes. It is actually a very deep relaxer to hold the toes at the meridians and I've incorporated it into almost every session. Usually at the beginning so my client has a chance to get up and walk afterwards.

Sorry Barefootamy, but in TCM the Spleen represents worry/pensiveness, the Kidneys represent fear.

Thank you RP - I see fear and anger as the two main emotions factoring into physical issues, everything else trickles out of these two. Worry is the correct emotion, the root is fear but you are right that it is worry. Sorry to confuse anyone.

Often when a client is taking medication I notice that their spleen reflex becomes quite swollen and puffy. For those that have finished their course of medication or stop taking it on advice from their GP I am always interested to note that their spleen relfexes return to normal.

I've just read up a bit about meridians and ordered the Inge Dougans book. What I'm confused slightly about is that the spleen meridian doesn't actually go through the spleen reflex on the foot. If working a reflex is thought to affect energy channels to that organ etc, and meridians are also along energy channels, does that mean we have a lot of energy channels going through organs etc?

Thanks for the recommendation re. Inge Dougans book. She's a brilliant reflexologist ; very sound stuff. I shall be going to order it tomorrow. A client of mine had her spleen removed after an accident. Apart from getting the flu jab each year she doesn't seem to come down with anything other than the odd cold here and there.

I know in TCM my spleen energy was usually out of kilter - and I was doing my share of worrying at the time, which put out my digestive system I was getting stomach upsets. So I had a course of acupuncture which seemed to help.

I haven't read this book, but i know that if you have had any problem with alcohol then you can experience spleen problems and spleen imbalance. If you used to tolerate drinking alcohol and now all of the sudden you can even take one sip, that this might be your problem. Sometimes this can induce enlarged spleen. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Well I found something else about spleen problems. They say that spleen problems can be induced by mono. I don’t know if your doctor has tested you for this but I found few websites where they are discussing mono and spleen problems, (for instance enlarged spleen).

thanks barefotamy, I also ordered the "Art of Reflexology...". the other one is over 40 pounds so I went for The Art of R.

I had been wondering for a while about the link btween the TCM meridiens and the western approach to reflexology, so that will be fantastic I am sure.

I also looked on the website at the liver and spleen area for myself, both around the great toe nail. great info.

You're welcome! Lilian's book isn't cheap, that's for sure, but it is good.

Edit: I meant to add perhaps your local Reflexology organization could start a lending library. I've done that here in the states where one could spend a small fortune on books alone.
