New Sheets

Need your suggestions once again...I know this has probably been posted before but I am so busy with other stuff this morning that I don't have time to search so thanks for your patience with me.It is time for me to purchase new sheets because the ones I have used for the past year are rancid! I have recently tried several ideas to get this smell from my sheets only to get them stained from my "experiments"!! Now I REALLY need new sheets.Anyone want to offer a "formula" I can use on the new sheets that will keep the rancid smell out but not stain the sheets (like clorox stains and discoloration)!  Thanks for all your great suggestions!  I LOVE THIS BOARD!!

The only things that I do are : make sure to wash the sheets as soon as possible and use detergent and also oxy-clean and wash in hot water.  That's about it.  I don't seem to have any trouble.  I'm not sure if it makes a difference what kind of oil/cream/lotion you use.  I use cream.  I don't seem to ever spill on the sheets so maybe that helps.

I was reading somewhere that not using oil eliminates the rancid problem. But their is an oil that is supposed to be clean. I am going to go look for the website I saw it on.

I used to use regular cotton sheets and a towel with oil as a lubricant.   It was horrible.  My sheets stained, smelled after only a few uses and some of the oil got into the clients clothes and did the same thing.  The oil seemed to go racid fast too.I have been using cream and jersey knit sheets for years now.  The combination works great.  The cream doesn't stain and the sheets clean much better.I get many compliments on the way the sheets smell.  Just the clean smell of being washed.  The jersey sheets seem to last longer too.

New Sheets

I LOVE oxi-clean. To wash my sheets (and to get stains out), I like to use hot water (as if you were washing whites), a little Dawn, detergent, oxi-clean, and fabric softener. The sheets smell great, feel great, and look great. I have 2 sets of white sheets (got too busy last week, had to buy sheets from the closest dollar store) that I use bleach on, but I will eventually dye green (or purple if I get a wild hair), and continue to just use the same washing routine.P.S. I use Biotone Dual-Purpose Creme if that helps.

  The only problem I have with stains is when the client is using a self tan product.  I've only had this problem once or twice but if it happens a couple more times I'm going to have it as a question to check on the intake form "are you using a self tanner?" and then will use a special set just for those people but now it hasn't been a problem yet.   I also use Biotone deep tissue lotion but sometimes use a scented oil.  I have had the same sheets for a little over a year and some of them I have had for about four years and they are still in great condition.  I think having good quality sheets helps.  I go to sales and purchase sheets with 400 thread count or higher.  Sure, I pay about $15-$20 per sheet (on sale) but they last for a long time, do not stain, and my clients notice how soft my sheets are! And it's a tax ride off.

I just recently bought all new sheets. They are incredibly soft 'sateen cotton'. Not a huge thread count though. They are also incredible colors... all the same print, very lovely purple, loden green, capuccino & blues. I won't be able to bleach the heck out of them like my previous ones, but I can use oxy-clean (love that product). At a friend's reccommendation, I tried Lotus Touch Therapeutic Oil Gel. I've only been working with my new linens for a week, but I can't even see that the oil gel is making much of a mess at all to even have to use spray-n-wash! I'm so pleased! As of now, I am mixing the oil gel & a wonderful olive oil based lotion together (plus EO's). I like that 'texture' better. Maybe all those years of thinking that coconut oil was the best was baloney! ha.Original poster:  you might be able to save rancid sheets, I don't know. Some people add all kinds of things to the wash that they swear by. Its my thinking that you really should start over with new linens & care for them differently than before (please, not saying you don't "care" about it, I'm 100% sure you do!). One thing I learned over the years was that I had to run my laundry with fewer items in the washer to get them the cleanest! Now with the sateen cotton sheets, instead of a cotton/poly blend, I also have to put fewer things through the dryer to make sure they don't come out all wrinkled & mussed.Good luck!JIll/Sagetherapist

I had a set of rancid sheets before.  It was after my pregnancy and I was just getting back into the swing of things.  I was refilling my oil bottle and spilled a bit onto the sheets.  LIttle did I know, the oil had gone rancid.  The smell didn't come out until about 10 washes later.  I added Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda into the load at the 10th wash.  It is a laundry booster similar to Oxy clean?  I'm not sure if its identical, but it does heat up and give off gas when you add water.

I have heard a small amount of dish washer gel added to the laundry and let it soak for a few hours(if you have the time) will get the smell and stains out. Dish washer gel is formulated to remove proteins so I guess that is why it works on the oils in the sheets. I have not tried this yet but will soon and let you know how it works.
