I heard that MP's accept US dollars in addition to colones...is this true?

How about girls at places like the Sportsmen Lodge and the Del Rey, is it strictly colones for them or can you pay with US money?

Also 1 more quick question I heard when in CR it is best to have a copy of your passport with you at all times with your entry stamp on it....if you bring a copy of your passport with you into Costa Rica will they stamp it at the immigration counter or what?

Yes, Mp's except dollars or colones. It's good to get a copy of your passport just in case your asked to produce it. I like to get a copy next to the presedente where they put it on a laminated card for you.

Even though they accept both, typically you come out better paying in colones.

Tourists are required to carry their passport or a copy of the photo page and a copy of the page with the current entry stamp on it.

Don't carry your passport around. Leave it locked up in your hotel and carry a copy. Most hotels can make a copy for you or there are plenty of copy shops in town like the one Cujo uses.

They only take local cash or out of state checks, and even food stamps if you eat em.

If you are walking out of the Presidente, look to the left, and across the street. About the second door (small entry) from the corner, on the opposite side of the street is a copy shop. They will make a laminated, wallet size copy for about 600c. Depending upon the line of peopole waiting, it takes 5-10 minutes.

Just a FYI if you go to a local bank to exchange currency they will want your passport not a copy.

Same goes if you rent a car.

Just remember compra means buy and that is the rate they will give you if they buy your dollars which is what you do when you exchange dollars for colones.

Venta means sell which comes only into play of your are selling your colones to buy dollars. Most tourists never get involved in that so just ignore it.

It doesn't make any difference if it changes a few colones each day. A difference of 10 colones from one day to the next you are only talking about $2 per $100 usd you exchange. If that makes a difference in your mongering then your budget is probably too tight to be there anyway.

I agree that the difference on the day to day exchange rate makes very little difference to someone here for a week or so but that has no relevance to what I posted.

My post was meant to lead people who wanted to know the current rate the place to go to get official daily rates. Yahoo and other web sites are not as accurate at the Banco Central De Costa Rica web site.

Better yet just bring your ATM card and get the current exchange without the hassle. Many ATM's offer you dollars or colonies. Waiting at the bank for service sometimes can be considerable time investment. ATM are available everywhere. I use mostly the Scotia Bank because they declare the fee which works out to $1.50 per transaction. One problem with ATM here is that they don't work after 10pm at night. However, there are some ATM's that work 24/7 but you have to look around. There is an ATM at Scotia Bank in Pavas that works 24/7.
