Chat Lessons (hopefully) learned from the pandemic

Just tossing out a few thoughts. Please add your own.

- Governments and people need to be ready for and expect crises.
- Citizens should have high standards for their leaders and hold them accountable.
- Most of our stuff should not be made in countries that are not our allies. In the future this will be largely addressed by advances in 3D printing and robotics, and localized on-demand manufacturing.
- Their will be future pandemics. The world needs ongoing and well financed research and preparation to anticipate and deal with this.
- Decision making must give more respect to science and less to opinions and public sentiment.
- For capitalism to survive the problems at the margins need to be addressed - there should not be working poor, corporations should not be reliant on never ending growth, companies should be by law responsible entities in the countries they operate in (in the current corporate model the only responsibility a corporation has is to maximum profit, and if that means polluting, bribing politicians and exporting jobs, they do it). Capitalism works far better than any other system, but it is not perfect.

I agree with Ursus. Here's the reason why:
- Vaccine or cure will never be found in short period of time even if they do only 1% or rich will get outright!
- The lock down or shutdown should have happened 2 months ago...Instead they call it racist!
- Detection or testing kit should have been created first and made available to majority of populace
- Have someone definitively declare if mask is a protection or not or find what can be used as PPE
- If China can build hospital facilities in weeks then Canada has no excuse
- As I have stated several times in this forum Canada has enormous land and resources
- Build staging or isolation areas for different purposes (refer to comments I made in other thread)
- Weeks ago defense minister said they are ready to deploy 24,000 troops...Fuck!...Deploy where??? Let them build various multi-purpose buildings and the rest watch over nuisance citizens....Not RCMP, they are too busy at border not sure why!
- Ontario alone has 100,000 teachers and school board/admin related personnel...what a waste sitting at home! Utilize these bodies and earn our tax dollars!
- Anyone who arrives at the airport will directly head to staging areas....screened, tested, isolated and quarantine at least 14 days
- Anyone detected and suspected of COVID-19 infections will go to isolation....screened, tested, isolated and quarantine at least 14 days
- Sources and places of infection will be sterilized and will not be accessible at leas 14 days
- Anyone found violators will also be directed to isolation....screened, tested, isolated and quarantine at least 14 days...And pay hefty fine!
- It will be very expensive but I would rather spend and build than have the money go somewhere on la la la land ending on few hands!
- Overall it will be cost effective!

Government keep declaring stimulus packages of billions of billions of dollars but unclear on what to do! Imbeciles...Acting as leaders but no concrete plan to show! Only intelligent individuals can make a great plan and steal money at the same time. I would rather have that person than the current impostor who got nothing! Look at the government...They could be salivating every time they will say billions of dollars. Unfortunately with their limited brain cells there is none they can offer! Minds too occupied on what they can do to amass millions or even billions of dollars out of this mess! Imagine....1 million is almost nothing out of 1 billion. Then move to 10 millions, 20, 30...For sure every day their heads are spinning. It is why we will never see anything good to happen! All talks, words, confusions and divisions that can lead to more devastation...These are not actions but rather way of deceiving people and eventually be able to sneak out some dough....without people noticing...sad!

Thank you for a very well thought out response. I do not think Canada is ready yet to quarantine everyone that has flu like symptoms, but in time it could be done. With billions of dollars being floated there probably will be grifting. I have more faith than you that a cure will eventually be found and that in the process there will be some breakthroughs in how to deal with viruses and pandemics. If the rich get the cure first then they will be the guinea pigs. In the long run the rich need us working and spending to keep them rich, so I think the cure would become available to everyone. I agree that Canada could do a lot more. For me the most important thing is to make testing widely available - make a recent negative test be a passport to work and commerce, a ticket out of isolation. And keep testing every week or two until a vaccine is deployed. Although it is killing my business, for the next little while I still think the lockdown is the safest course, or at least the best gamble out of the shitty choices. Ideally after two weeks of shutdown everyone would get tested and if they pass rejoin the economy. I think that there should be anti-gouging laws - e.g. punish those stores that have jacked up the price of sanitizer by 500%.

I can understand your POV. But without a strongman at the helm all I see is pessimism on where the government stand. It will be a long battle. The repercussions and end results might be irreversible. Hardship will befall upon us...the tax payers! I am not even going to mention about lives and who will survive.

Canadians and people living on this land have to cooperate otherwise many will suffer and perish!

It was just last week the government declared a list of essential services which in my mind included rocky and bullwinkle.
It has been 3 weeks? although the bat signal was shining in Jan/Feb.
2 weeks they said, for what?

Dubai is peroxiding the streets, you need permission and they are tracking. Other countries you need a mask to take public transport.
