Laptop in therapy room?

Hi All

Do you use a laptop in your therapy room?

When you have your client in the room, are they able to see it or do you screen it off?

If you don't, what do you use to keep notes?

I don't use my laptop in the therapy room, but I don't have objection with keeping notes on a computer.

As far as using a computer during the consultation is concerned, I think it depends on the type of treatment. I won't seem out of place when doing sport of remedial massage, but for holistic/swedish, hot stone, etc. the screen could upset the ambiance and balance of the room.

Out of curiousity, to see how many therapists were using them.

Thought the use of a laptop was convenient if you booked a room and had clients' info to hand.

Then thought, it might not sit too well with clients. Like myarka said it might ruin the ambience when carrying out certain therapies.

But Penny, couldn't you, if you need to enter details on the laptop rather than on paper for example, simply do so and then turn the laptop off and close it up. That way it's not emitting any negative energy and not interfering with the treatment. I think it actually depends on how 'hi-tech' your treatment room is. If it's kind of dreamy and fragrant, candles, music etc then I think a laptop really shouldn't be there. If it's modern and minimalist and less new-agey, then a laptop would fit in. IMHO.

Yes, could close it up and put it in the room somewhere, so it can't be seen by the client.

Still would like to know how many therapists use it.

Thanks for the explanation. I work in a clinic and the receptionist has all the client forms in drawers. I have the clients consultation form to hand before they arrive and I have a quick look to see what I did on their previous visit and what if any issue/s they had. If I did use a lap top I'd close it and put it away so the client didn't see it. I think having it open might spoil the ambience too.

if you keep clients details on laptop you will need to register with data protection, you used to have to pay a fee of about £95 and take precautions to safeguard info

No laptop from myself. Just a good old fashion diary and pen. I used to use a computer to play soothing music during my massage treatments but the majority of my clients appreciated the peace and quiet. x

I use a netbook to store my old client records, saves me carrying masses of notes around with me when repeat clients come in, does mean registering with the Data Protection people more costs. I try to look at the notes before the client is in the room to refresh my memory as to their previous treatments with me. Otherwise during the consultation time it's good old penand paper.

Hadn't thought of having a laptop in my therapy room... I could keep an eye on Facebook while my clients' eyes were shut!

It's £35 per year for businesses of fewer than 250 (I think) employees, and even if you use paper, the Data Protection Act does apply now. Things such as locking paperwork away and taking all necessary precautions to prevent unauthorised access. And passwords if you computerise information. It's all common sense stuff, but the Information Commissioner's website is really hard to make sense of!

Hi, i am registered with Data Protection, most of it is common sense, all my records are paper based, and locked in a filing cabinet. I was told that because i store peoples data, and use it for the occasional marketing, i need a licence, or risk getting fined. They also said if i use a laptop with client data on it, then i must take reasonable steps to secure it with passwords and encryption software.

Hence i stick to pen and paper and a filing cabinet.
