Is this a scam or what?

Something weird happened the other day with an MPA who I've known for a long time but only see sparingly.

Out of the blue, she said she wanted to ask me something. Turns out she wants to give me $2000 in cash and in return have me write a cheque in her name for the same $2000. I ask why and she can't give me a good reason, she says her friends do that all the time.

Obviously this sounds too fishy so I said no.

Does anyone know any scams out there related to this? Was I right to say no?

Could be money laundering esp. if she is asking other clients the same favor. $2000 here, $2000 there, etc.

The bills may be marked or counterfeit (or she suspects they are).

Rather than filing self-employment income tax as an MPA (licensed, legit profession), she may be setting up a low-income fictional business where getting paid by cheque is more convincing, with a paper trail.

it is a very small amount to be considered as money laundering. Some girls just want to show they have a decent job with payments coming in to build their credit rating for their personal purposes. Most of them have no credit cards, no credit records and they have a hard time when some business owners check for their credit ratings for leasing cars or buying or renting a condo and such.
I have helped out two girls at SRM a few yrs back while I was running my business. No big deal so long as you know what kind of girl you are dealing with. It is best to tell the girl to go register a small company under her name. So it is much easier to write a cheque to them as a referal fees or consulting fees. Donno how much it is now to register a small sole owner business. A few yrs back it was only $350 to register a company at 330 University ave and you get it right away. All she needs is go to the bank and open a business account under that name after that. Also suggest her to get a pre paid credit card and use it regularly and pay the bills in time. That's the best way to build a credit rating. If you have no credit card, you have no credit rating and life can be tough without it.

Any one of the above reasons could be the correct one. But who knows which one it is? If she doesn't want to tell you why, then I wouldn't get involved.

Why? Plenty of legitmate cash-based professions (bartender, waitress, stripper, MPA...). The "bodyrubber" license even comes up in background checks.
