^^^ Why? The federal Liberals have tried to bail out Alberta with pipeline dollars, but the reality is that they can't change oil prices or make up for decades of resource mismanagement. During the pandemic they've spent untold amounts of money on support for individuals and businesses, while the provincial government has stood around with their thumbs up their asses, hoping it will just go away. I'm no fan of Trudeau, but overall the federal government has done a decent job. I suspect having people like Freeland in cabinet has helped - some really smart folks in there.

I disliked Jim Prentice, but he did speak the truth. Albertans needed to look in the mirror concerning Alberta's economic woes, not to the federal government.

Oh, and you can crow on about carbon taxes, but they are a reality of our 21st century world and we're already seeing foreign investment waning due to lack of climate change policies. I did prefer the NDP tax as it was retained in the province and spent on things like transit expansion, etc. The rebate I got from the feds didn't make much of a difference to me, I was above the rebate threshold for the Alberta carbon tax, and that was fine.

Alberta doesn't need $100/bbl oil. You can tell the old dinosaurs on this board . Clueless. At the same time, what I agree on is that Alberta wasted its opportunities over past 40 years to diversify its economic engines. Btw, Canada as a whole has also failed in this. Talking about the resilient green economy, and AI business incubators etc. is all talk. Innovation and Investments go hand in hand. Sadly Canada has failed in drawing in global investors. The whole immigration theme has been around propping up the real estate and consumption Ponzi scheme, not much else. Argentina got stuck in the 1930's... Canada got stuck in the 2010's. Let's see if this country can pull itself out of its lethargy. As a private investor, I rarely find companies traded on the Toronto exchange that are of serious long term interest (with a few exceptions).

Oh, you're right in that Alberta oil companies don't need $100 oil to make money. But if Albertans want another unskilled labour boom, then we need $100 oil. Companies have increased automation and other processes to cope with lower oil prices. The type of oil boom that Albertans want where someone who "got my grade 10" can roll in and make $100K or more a year won't happen again unless we have high prices, and even then it won't be the same demand for labour that it was in the past.

Those days are gone, and a lot of people don't realise that. We slashed royalties and taxes on the premise that those high paying unskilled jobs would just keep happening, keeping Albertans fat and happy. This left coffers empty when the boom when bust and now we have no rainy day fund and the jobs are gone.

Ontario did the same thing but with regards to manufacturing. BC is doing it with real estate and money laundering. The maritimes went all in on the fishery.

I learned a long time ago that during a debate when an individual starts with the insults, cursing, or name calling it is generally due to the fact they can't support their case and they have no where to run. When the facts support an argument the person making it tends to be civil as they know they are in the right and can prove it.
