Chavutti massage

Hi and happy new year!
Anyone has trained in chavutti thirumal massage? I have been trying to contact schools in London that are supposed to offer this course but they actually don't.
Anyone has trained in Chavutti in India?
I would be interested in hearing your experiences?

Yes - I trained in Chavutti Thirumal last year with Helen Noakes when she came to London. Barbara I belive was also trained by Helen. I don't think there are any other places in London teaching Chavutti at the moment.

Essence, you said you trained last year. Are you practising now? How do you find it? Is there much demand for it?
Also, how does your body feel practising compared to working on a couch?
Any insight would be much appreciated!

I'm not practising it much at the moment but I do intend to start marketing it more as I think it is a great massage to receive. Because I don't do it often it does feel like harder work compared to table massage. My arms and ribs ache the day after but it's because I'm using my body in a different way. I know that once I do it more often my body will get used to it. At the moment I am also I am trying to stick to the routine as much as possible so I'm concentrating on remembering the strokes/specific body areas.

That helps. I guess you are right, it is a completely different way of using your body and somehow it feels like a very logical and common sense way of dealing with the big guys that need deep tissue.
I have e-mailed Helen but I think she must be in India as a chavutti course is advertised for next week in Goa.
Tempting to pack few t-shirts and leave the snow for a couple of weeks of chavutti and sunshine...

Hi MS

I'm not trained in Chivatti, but in a Thai version called Yam Khang (meaning foot pressure) and add techniques and treatment patterns from Chinese Tui-Na & Indonesian massage. I do this technique sometimes when massaging on a futon. I personally find it easy to massage that way and save my hands, and it's nice to do long sweepie movements with the feet. Physical fitness is important, and doing something like yoga or tai chi is really beneficial. I've been doing Tai Chi since '95 and found it an important skill do this type of work in maintaining good foot pressure and continuity of flow.

Yes I did Yam Khang (Fire Therapy) in Thailand at : www.smh-chiangmai.com

It is quite a rare therapy and not many people know about it. Also did Pregnancy & Baby Massage there as well.

Their prices are reasonable and the atmosphere of the school is wonderful. But if you ever go there and haven't done Thai massage before, I would suggest doing the Thai Massage level 1 course before Yam Khang, due to the treatment logic of Thai which is different to western massage.

Are you training out there, and if so with whom? I would recommend not to go the the ITM school in Chiang Mai - it's a conveyer belt!

No i am not going to the ITM but I appreciate the warning. I am going to the north of chiang mai to a lahu village with the sunshine network.
Do you know them?

I have only been on one Sunshine course at the Chiang Mai school, Advanced Side Position. Because I paid for personal tuition I was taught even more, as the tutor could see that I was a experienced Thai practitioner. Ended up covering two courses.

The Sunshine Network has a good reputation and being in Lahu in the foot hills, it should be a wonderful experience. One bit of advice: the Sunshine Network was started by Asokananda (unfortunately passed away). I would try of buy as many of his books as possible. They are small and light weight and very hard to purchase in the UK, and that includes Amazon! He also does one on Chavutti.
