Blending methods

Hi everyone,

My tutor has taught us to use the original Maury method of blending. Which apparently is IFPA recognised. However we have been told we can use any method we like as long as we have researched them and can back up why we are using a certain method.
I quite like the Maury method we have been using. However apart from our course notes, I have been unable to find anything written down about this method. I certainly haven't much on different arguments for different methods. Therefore I am finding it hard to reference it.

We use - 1% on the face
3-5% for massage
10% localised problems.
A huge amount for baths - which would probably be impractical from a financial point of view.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me.

That's what I was taught to use too.

Do you have many books on Aromatherapy (I have over 30 and always referring to them, Patricia Davis, Franzesca Watson and Renee Tanner are the ones I use the most, Rosemary Caddy has a blending guide book), most books have recipes in, and you can adjust accordingly.

I find it's best to research for yourself, and there are many good websites to read up on too (Aromaweb is particularly good), just google your questions and they are there for you.

Hi Jo,

I have a number of books. Including Price, Caddy, Worwood, Lawless, Buckley etc. A number have different blending methods however none of the research or books so far has included specifically the original Maury method. I can't reference my course notes in my case studies so I would like to find a book etc that mentions this method. I am obviosuly looking in the wrong books as I can't find any with this in. I am doing lots of research but if anynoe could point me in the driection of which books mention this method I would be very grateful.

I did a bit of googling and found out that Daniele Ryman is a protege of Maury, have you any of her books (I don't, but I think I will have a look on Amazon for some) they may shed some light on what you are looking for.

Have to admit I have never thought why I was taught this way, our massage routine was by Micheline Arcier, I wonder if there is anything her book. I will go and have a read and report back later

Hi Ellie, I have just looked in Micheline Arcier's book, and it doesn't mention the Maury Method, I am going to email my old tutor to ask her, will report back when I have got a reply

so you describe it as percentages instead of amounts of drops?

Nooo you're not stupid, from the amount of drops you can work out the percentages, as follows is how I was taught:-

Carrier Oil mls % Drops of EO

10ml (20ml) 5 10 (20)
10ml (20ml) 4 8 (16)
10ml (20ml) 3 6 (12)
10ml (20ml) 2 4 (8)
10ml (20ml) 1 2 (4)
10ml (20ml) 1/2 1 (2)

So if you wanted to use a 3% blend on someone for a full body massage (not including the face) you would use (an example) 30ml of carrier oil, 3 oils, 5 drops from each oil (remember this is an example) so thats 15 drops of EO. So for every other 10 ml of oil you double up, does this make sense



Sorry it didn't do what I wanted, the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and 1/2 in the middle is the percentages, and the 10, 8, 6, 4 etc to the right is the drops of Essential Oil

Lovely to hear from you.
Sorry I am only replying now, but it spurted a little journey of research…
Yes we do use the Maury method in that Margret Maury developed the individual prescription as she called it. She used aromatherapy very much in the cosmetic and beauty industry as used today and recognised the importance of an individual blend of matching the EO to the client’s physical/psychological needs and requirements – a balancing oil – using all notes were prescribed…as we do today. The way it’s done is incidental. One thing she did note that any 2 blends using the same oils and carriers would always produce different results according to how the client responds to the blend.

The method is documented in Marguerite Maury's Guide to Aromatherapy - Secret of Life and Youth

I have this book, so will look through it, it is available on Amazon too, someone has it priced for £93 LOL but there are some for about a fiver.
