Hi folks,Asked this in another thread, but no one responded.I heard a rumor about some MTs who used BioTone products their entire careers and now have some kind of cancer problem with their hands? I can't find a source for it online though. Anybody else heard this?-EM

I recently had a teacher explain that MT's who massage alot (she stressed "alot") .. had been getting some sort of growth in the axilliary region that needed to be lanced off.  She had recommended using chemical free lotions when massaging. That news kind of threw me. She had given us the name of a company - but you need to be a member to order their products. I can find out the name and post for you. I'm sure there are some organic lotions online that  would probably do. I'm planning on ordering some for myself.

I know the director of education at my school is steering away from it for that reason. I've tried some of it, and I find that it smells like makeup.

i have not heard this.i have not been happy with the quality of biotone products for a good couple of years. but that's my personal preference.

My skin reacts to Biotone products.  I have tried many different types of oils and lotions and my favorite one is from Natural Formulations.  They are all natural.  Not, only do I not break out with their lotions and oils but, since they are hypoallergic neither do my clients.  Here is their website.

I have not heard about a cancer risk w/Biotone, but I do blame Biotone for eczema on my hands.  When I first started out, I used the Biotone Dual-Purpose creme.  I would place a dollop on my upper L arm, as a 'reserve' to dip into while I was massaging.  Although I would have never described myself as having sensitive skin, after a while, I started to break out with an itchy rash on my upper arm & between my 3rd & 4th fingers on my R hand.  Went to the Doc & yup, it's eczema.  Now, I have a hard time using ANY lotions or cremes & only use oil when I work, otherwise my rash flares up on my hand.HHMB - thanks for the link to natural formulations, I'm gonna check them out!heather

I ordered a 1/2 gallon of the Natural Formulations deep tissue lotion.  Thanks for the link.  I've been considering switching for a while now.  The Biotone deep tissue lotion smells like metal and dirt to me lately.  It would be really cool to have something a little more natural.  The price difference is nice too!   Katykangaroo

I love Natural Formulations!  I have been using them about 3 years now and really can't stand using anything else.  I use the lotion and the cream, depending upon the work and season.  I also used to use Biotone (a couple places I worked at out of school used it) and got to where I hated the smell.  Also, I started to notice that my skin on the back of my hands would dry out and get itchy.  So, I looked around to different companies and products...ordered the smallest sized bottles (about 1 of each kind they had) and practiced using them.  Some I tossed right away, a few others I used until they were finished.  But once I tried Natural Formulations I knew that was it.  I like the fact that the ingrediants are natural and the texture and glide is perfect.  Occassionally I will use a light application cocoa butter (the hard yellow stuff...melts with body heat) for really deep work.  It has a good drag and you can affect the fascia without feeling like you're pulling the skin too much.

Hello,I just read the postings on biotone...which then went off on Natural Formulations products...do any of you know about Pure Pro? or have any comments on it vs Natural Formulations? I was excited to learn about Pure Pro being natural ingredients etc....I'm ordering a catalogue for NF to compare prices...hopefully I can find out info about ingredients and what exactly they are good/bad.Ashira )

I can't comment on Natural Formulations vs. Pure Pro, but I have used Pure Pro and I like it a lot. I appreciate that it's made from natural ingredients.  A graduate from the school I'm attending now created the product after she found other massage oils were giving her rashes. I like the fact that it's owned and operated by a practicing massage therapist too.

I switched from Biotone Gel to Pure Pro's Ultra blend oil and I love the Pure Pro oil.  When I was trying to read the ingredents on the bottle of gel, I didn't know what some of the ingredents were.  I wanted a product in which I could understand and research the ingredents, so I switched.  The Ultra blend is light but has great glide.  Some of my clients have purchased the oil to use at home.  I hope that helps.

Just a thought.....maybe the rumor was started by Biotone's competitors?  I've used their massage lotion, creme, and gel products for years with absolutely no complications for myself or my clients.  Also having trained a couple of hundred massage therapists using Biotone products, I've never heard of a problem.Let's not jump to any hasty conclusions.  I'm all for using natural products, but let's not disparage a company based on rumors.Ben Crabtree, RMT, CNMTSan Antonio, Texaswww.massagebyben.com

I use only 100% natural or certified organic products. Usually I make all my own products. I will not compromise my health and wellness nor that of my client either. Products that have ingredients that are toxic are always a no-no in my book. I could list the companies that fall into this category, but suffice it to say that the information is out there- no need to disparage companies- they do that for themselves by producing/promoting products with toxic or questionable ingredients!

I've never had a problem using biotone. I generally have not tried too many other products but theones I have have been too greasy and feels like I'm using cooking grease or butter. I may actually try out Natural Formulations and/or Pure Pro. Both sound good and I'm sure there are other things out there that I'd like besides biotone.

I got my 1/2 gallon of Natural Formulations Deep Tissue Lotion, and I really like it!It's a little bit thicker than the Biotone Deep Tissue Lotion - a little bit creamier.  It makes my hands so soft, too!  I haven't had it used on me yet, but my clients seem to like it.  It doesn't have a weird smell either.My only problem so far is that when I start my day, I usually wrap a heating pad around my lotion for 10 minutes and then shake the bottle to disperse the heat, but the NF lotion is so thick that it doesn't shake up very well.  I may have to find a different way to warm it.Katykangaroo

My Natural Formulations catalogue came today and I have to say, I'm really disappointed with them.

I know "natural" has no legal definition, but the ingredient listings in this catalogue don't fit my conception of natural. The products contain a lot of very refined chemicals.

Most contain PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, a chemical that has no direct toxicity data (its safety has been presumed based on its similarity to other chemicals), can be contaminated with impurities linked to breast cancer and other problems, and alters skin structure allowing increased absorption of the other chemicals in the product. Cheimcals like... DMDM hydantoin, which can contain formaldehyde... and methyl and propyl parabens! If I wanted to buy a product with parabens, I could just pick up some Aveda stuff down the street.

Natural Formulations fails to tell us where some of these ingredients come from (are they petro-chemical based?) That they go out of their way to tell us that SOME of the ingredients are plant derived but not others isn't increasing my confidence.

As for Pure Pro, their lotion and cream also contain parabens, as well as imidazolidinyl urea (another formaldehyde issue).

In the meantime, I guess Santa Barbara Massage Cream is the only option. Not what I would prefer for Swedish, but at least I can use it knowing that my money hasn't gone into the production of chemicals that are potentially harmful for the planet, myself, and my client.

I'm still holding out for the product of my dreams! It must be possible: a massage lotion--made from organic, unrefined ingredients--that truly honors myself and my client in its production, application, and use.

I relate! I will not use polysorbate-20 or products that contain it. When needing an emulsifier, I use liquid lecithin. I also use straight coconut oil and shea butter for deep tissue, in addition to making creams with these ingredients.

I also use only vegan products, so beeswax and emu oil and other animal products aren't an option for me or my clients.
