Using Arnica?

Its the deer season opener this weekend - I would like to do a "Calm of the Wild" (get it? CALL of the wild!) Sportsman Special type thing. A more deep, sports oriented massage - These guys can get pretty stiff sore after a day in the field. I heard that Arnica is great for healing and sports massage - but how can I incorporate it into a massage? In what form do I use it? Anything else I can use? Sombra and Prossage would be good too.

**I dont like hunting of ANY kind....but after totalling two cars by hitting deer I am more inclined to believe in some population control!

Using Arnica

Hello, I use Arnica Oil brand name - Weleda. It has a woodsey smell and it works nicely to massage with. Massage catalogs and health food stores carry it.

anyway, cute idea.

i think that biotone dual purpose massage cream has arnica and ivy in it. arnica is very good for bruising, aches and pains (i have a horse trainer who swears by it). if that particular cream isn't it, i KNOW that one of their creams does have it.

do a search for 'arnica montana' and you will certainly find creams, ointments and such with this awesome ingredient.

Yes, the biotone dual purpose cream has arnica and ivy extracts in it. I use it all the time. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't say how much arnica is in the cream. I personally use arnica gel on injuries, especially when my hands are sore, I rub it in. I wouldn't use it directly for massage, unless it is built into the product. I would apply it after the session in the effected areas, and educate my clients on the benefits of arnica as a suggested measure.

I also use the Weleda Arnica Oil and think it's fantastic! I use it full strength on my elderly clients. You know how how their skin gets thin and anytime they bump something they get the large bruise-like discolorations (especially when they are on blood-thinners?) Well, I put arnica oil on them and it really helps a lot. Some of my clients I even give them some to take home with them to use in between sessions.

I also add some of the arnica oil to my massage creme and I swear that it helps to prevent soreness in my hands.

When using this oil (because of the St. John's Wort) - would you have to watch out for women on Birth Control Pills? I have read it will reduce the effectiveness of BCP. It is too small an amount to matter?

i'm pretty sure that's only if you ingest st. john's wart. i don't think an oil on the skin is going to mess with BCP.

i love arnica gel. i have not tried welda's because it contains lanolin. i've always heard that it actually dries you out. i do want to check out that mountain rose product. thanks for the link.

Within the information it states that there is no evidence that supports it having an effect on birth control pills.
