Thai doormen/Thai guys looking for fights

As you probably will have seen from my intro thread I am doing some general research about Thailand for what will be my first trip.

One of the things I seem to have read a few times is how violent Thai males can be. Something along the lines of Thai bouncers would rather beat the shit out of a tourist than keep the peace, and the front of bars are usually lined with young Thai thugs looking for trouble.

Id be going in a group anyway but that aside im never one to look for trouble, even if pissed. Is this exaggerated or does it differ from city to city? I think the article I read was about Nana Plaza in Bangkok but im not sure where ill be going. Probably Phuket or Koh Panang.

As long as you are not looking for a fight or trouble, always smile and be charming specially Patong is not dangerous. BKK is a big city but in my mind not unsafer than other big cities in the world.

Drunken Thais can be a problem. When you (think) you come in trouble with drunken male Thais, stay cool, smile, be charming and leave the place. If it comes to a fight, you loose, for 100% sure.

555Not quite finished yet...I think it's very natural to have safety as the primary concern when visiting a foreign country for the first time...I've been to LOS four times and feel much more at ease with each visit. I was on high alert on my first visit. The same when I went to Coasta Rica. I'm thinking about going to PI instead of LOS this October and yes, my biggest concern is how safe it will be. Much more nervous about going there than if I returned to LOS for fifth time.

That is good advice. I have found that bgs can smell trouble faster than i have been able to and in my experience they make sure you can well away if something is going to kick off.

The likelihood of a knife being caried is always something I'd consider.

but seen as i don't speak thai, i have no way of knowing what they were saying, It was enough to make the girls nervous though and a sixth sense told me they were going to get angry.

People who dont look for trouble dont get any trouble, the guys that get beaten up behave like dickheads or rude towards everyone else.

i would say exaggerated, if you don't make trouble, rarely would it find you.
probably best to avoid drinking with thai guys though, if you don't know them.

they can fire up pretty quickly and conflict resolution is not a strong thai front.

as above, if it comes to a fight, it's not 1 on 1, it's all against you, group or not you will lose, don't even think about
western bravado, you will lose.

not to worry mate, just go and have a good time, if you feel threatened, don't be confrontational, pay your bill (bin) and go somewhere else, there are plenty of places that will take your money and make sure you have a good time, no point staying somewhere where you're not comfortable.

Fact is, specifically in tourist areas Thai blokes hate farang blokes so any chance they get of laying the boot into a farang they will... hence the usual 10 on one scenario that often occurs, whether the farang is in the right or not.....

i think there are far less people looking to cause a problem in tourist parts of thailand than in london/manchester etc. unfortunately, if you are in a situation, the rules seem to differ. it will not be 1 on 1, and the first strike will probably come from behind!

sometimes there are principles involved - if someone has scammed you for a few quid more - it seems right to confront, thats ok as long you don't act like you will cause a problem, if you go more aggressive then be warned that the consequences may not be worth the principle of losing a few quid. unless the rest of the kop is standing beside you!

A random 2 person discussion and they come running from all sides to lay the boot in, when they have no connection at all to the incident or either party.

Never felt that especially in Bangla that the thai blokes are looking for problems. If anything they all seem pretty friendly and join in with the banter but rest assured that the friendliness will soon evaporate if you become involved in a confrontation. Knives seem pretty prevalent so even though Thai guys look small a knife to the ribs is a good equalizer in fight.
Just keep your company with the girls rather than the guys and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Dont be silly Ben, you know this kind of stuff as well as anyone.. Try going to Galaxy at 2am and see how friendly everyone is. You can do it, but you need to really have your careful head on.

just like to say that this gang mentality of fighting is not just a thai thing, it happens everywhere! thailand is no different to the rest of the world when it comes to getting in trouble or into a fight.

anyway i have never had trouble with any thais but plenty with the french!

i think some people are a little naive with their interactions with thai men
especially in situations like thai discos
i would say almost any time that they are interacting with you, they are taking the piss( in a thai disco i mean, not always)
